History comes alive for families who visit museum’s extensive Americana collection

Bring American history to life when you bring the kids to the Concord Museum. Among its 16 renovated galleries are those with artifacts from the Revolutionary War, including one of the lanterns that started Paul Revere on his famous ride, as well as muskets, swords, canes and cannon balls. Other artifacts celebrate the town’s Indigenous history as well as items from literary icons including Thoreau’s writing desk (where he wrote “Walden”) and Emerson’s study with his books. Stroll, swim, see an equestrian show: There are plenty of fun family things to do at Goddard Memorial State Park. The 472-acre park has 355 picnic tables, so definitely bring a lunch! There are 18 miles of bridle trails and 11 game fields, spacious lawns and forested areas and an expansive sandy, saltwater beach for swimming (there’s a seasonal lifeguard) and fishing. Launch your kayak or canoe from the boat ramp. Equestrian shows, concerts and other events are held in the pavilion. There’s also a par-36, nine-hole public golf course. From amusement park to state park, Rocky Point has been a favorite with families for decades

Rocky Point has been a favorite gathering place for families for almost two centuries, first as the Rocky Point Amusement Park and, since 2014, in its reincarnation as a multi-use state park. Rocky Point Park, set on 124 acres in the upper part of Narragansett Bay, features hiking and biking trails and, in the highlands, wide open fields for recreation. It’s a great spot for family picnics and walks along the craggy beach, exploring tidal pools and seeking out shells and sea glass. A public fishing pier consists of a long wooden walkway from the blacktop path out to a main deck 13 feet above the water. Leashed dogs are permitted in the park. Movies are shown on the lawn in the summer.

Twenty-eight miles of hiking and walking trails (and snowshoeing/skiing trails in winter) go by seven cascading waterfalls. At Shannon Pond, rainbow trout actually jump out of the water for food.(And, there are ducks.) There’s plenty of room to run around in The Meadows, with picnic tables to enjoy lunch or ice cream from the nearby Cafe in the Clouds. The Arts-and-Crafts Lucknow mansion, built in 1914, has a basement tour so you can see how the servants lived as well as the ahead-of-their-time appliances. The mansion also has a scavenger hunt. Bring the family to the Connecticut River Museum and prepare for a day that is both fun and educational. Through artifacts and artwork, you’ll learn about the river’s history and its Native American communities, explore the memorabilia and vintage racing motors of the speed-racing era on the river from 1900 to 1940, trace the river in a vertical mural that winds up and down three floors, or step inside a replica of the Turtle, the first submarine to be used in combat in 1776. Salem is a town designed for exploration by children and adults alike, and there’s no better place to start than the Salem Witch Museum, where light is shed on one of the country’s darkest moments: the 1692 Salem Witch Trials.
