The Audubon Environmental Education Center is a state-of-the art natural history museum and aquarium that puts fun and excitement into experiencing nature. Look inside a 33-foot life size Right Whale, discover life in a tide pool, and observe Narragansett Bay’s marine life. The Center’s interactive exhibits feature local habitats. Situated on the 28-acre McIntosh Wildlife Refuge the Environmental Education Center has walking trails with a ¼ mile boardwalk that winds through fresh and saltwater marshes leading to a majestic view of Narragansett Bay. The refuge is along the East Bay Bike Path allowing bikers and walkers access to the refuge’s natural beauty. A compelling approach to history; a memorable visitor experience.
Plimoth Plantation, a bicultural museum, offers powerful personal encounters with history built on thorough research about the Wampanoag People and the Colonial English community in the 1600s. The 1627 English Village is a re-creation of the small farming town built by English colonists in the midst of the Wampanoag homeland. At the Wampanoag Homesite, the people you will meet talk of the past, speaking from a modern perspective. Mayflower II is an extraordinary experience. Details of the ship are all carefully recreated to give a sense of what the original 17th-century vessel was like. A visit to Plimoth Plantation encourages a new level of understanding about present-day issues affecting communities around the world. Stone Zoo features a wildly popular black bear exhibit and greater Boston’s only white-cheeked gibbon exhibit. The Zoo is also home to colobus monkeys, Canada lynxes, snow leopards, Mexican gray wolves, river otters, spider monkeys, capybara and many other interesting and fascinating animals from around the world. The Treasures of the Sierra Madre exhibit features jaguars, cougars, coyotes, and Gila monsters. At Windows to the Wild, view hyacinth macaws, flamingos, emperor tamarins, and African-crested porcupines. Open year round - except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our Family Activity Center provides period crafts and games. Children also enjoy the gardens, the Abbott Corner Store with its groceries from the 1940s, the cooper and the 1950s house. Climb up the Secret Staircase at The House of the Seven Gables in Salem, Massachusetts! This seaside historic site features Turner-Ingersoll Mansion (1668), forever immortalized as “The House of the Seven Gables” by author Nathaniel Hawthorne.
